What makes a Bösendorfer so special?
Naturally Wood
The basis of each Bösendorfer Grand is spruce that is naturally dried by air and has proven to be the ideal tone wood. Integrated spruce components make up more than 80% of their instruments, which is more than any other manufacturer.
The Austrian spruce has to be grown at a minimum of 800 meters above sea level, guaranteeing a very dense and regular grain structure. When you add the natural drying process to the manufacturing time, it actually takes 6 years until the Bösendorfer Grand arrives at your doorstep.
Hand Spun Bass
All bass strings are spun in the unique Bösendorfer way. A steel core string is the basis for 1 or 2 layers of copper. The carefully spun strings are a substantial element of the warm and sonorous Bösendorfer bass.
Independent Capo d’Astro
Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer that applies a detachable and independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This is how they assure the most precise adjustment in the upper register, guaranteeing the original Bösendorfer sound for generations.
Traditional Sand Cast
Bösendorfer uses traditional sand casting to forge the frame. The raw frames, produced in Austria, rest for 6 months outside the factory. This is how all inner tensions of the forging process are released allowing the frame to remain relaxed under 20 tons of string tension. Pure stability.

How much does a Bösendorfer cost?
There’s no point beating about the bush – a Bösendorfer is an expensive piano.
With each grand model some six years in the making it’s no real surprise that they typically retail upwards of £100k.
If that’s a little more than you’d budgeted for, you can enjoy the same musical excellence from a grand upright. These are lighter on the pocket and tend to start from £38k.

Is a Bösendorfer similar to a Steinway?
Bösendorfer and Steinway pianos are often compared.
Sitting within the upper echelons of piano manufacturing, both brands are recognised for producing pianos that are a feast for the senses – looking every bit as beautiful as they sound.
Both are exquisite, but it is perhaps within the sound that the biggest differences can be found.
A Steinway is more even in tone, making it versatile and a good choice for everything from classical music to more modern genres. A Bösendorfer offers a more robust bass range whilst still being incredibly impressive in treble. It also boasts a fast action.
