Ok, so for the last 12 months we’ve had little choice but to be at home. But when it comes to learning to play the piano, there are few more ideal choices (pianos aren’t renowned for their portability!).
Many pianists – particularly those just starting out – like to play their own instrument, making learning at home the preferred option. And if you’re a beginner, there’s also every chance you’d like to get familiar with the basics before taking up more formal or public lessons. But where do you even begin?
With some 88 keys staring back at you, learning to play the piano can be more than a little daunting. But it is absolutely worth it! Getting set up
If you want to start learning the piano at home the most fundamental concern is your actual instrument.
There are numerous different pianos available (it’s worth reading our blog on the different types to find out more on this – and, of course, you can always talk to a member of the team too).
Keep in mind where you want the piano to go and be realistic about the space you have available. It’s also worth thinking about when and how you will practise. Do you work shifts? Will you only be able to play when the noise may run the risk of disturbing other people? If so, perhaps a piano with volume control or the option of a silent mode would be preferable.
If you’re just starting out, you may be nervous about buying a piano, worried you’ll discover it’s not for you. If that sounds familiar, then you could consider hiring. It’s a great way to start learning the piano at home, without the long-term commitment.
Now for the playing…
Piano in place, you’re ready to start learning to play. But how?
Firstly, familiarise yourself with the keys, discover the sounds you can make and don’t be scared to make a racket – that’s part of the joy of learning the piano at home, and you need to get to know your instrument and what it’s capable of.
Thanks to the powers of the internet, there are now a host of readily accessible ways you can learn the piano at home. These come with the added advantage of being available 24/7 – so you can choose to have a lesson at any time of the day, whenever it’s convenient for you.

Videos
If you’re struggling even to locate ‘middle C’, then start by watching some beginners’ piano guides. You’ll find videos on everything and for all levels and styles of learning. From simply watching how someone else plays to guides on the basic notes, hand positioning and lessons on reading music. There’s a wealth of information and tutorials at your disposal.

Interactive apps
These are a great way to learn and can be particularly engaging for children as you follow the actions of the keys that light up on-screen.

An online course
Sign up for an online course in piano playing and you can usually choose to access all your lessons in one go (if you’re really keen!) or stagger them to progress at your own pace. What’s more, you can recap and rewind as many times as you like, until you feel confident to move on.

Live lessons
Facetime, Zoom, Skype, there are many different platforms that can be used for live lessons from the comfort of your own home. Taking sessions online has proved popular during lockdown and it’s likely that the convenience for both pupil and teacher will see this method continue.

A visiting tutor
Don’t think online learning is for you? Or have you spent time learning the piano on your own and now you want more hands-on guidance to hone your skill? If so, then a tutor who regularly visits your home for lessons in person is a great idea. Offering the convenience of ‘in person’ training, they can gain a much clearer picture of your playing and provide real-time advice and guidance to enhance your technique.
